The machine uses an extremely thin, continuously moving brass wire (typically between 0.1mm and 0.3mm in diameter) as an electrode. When a high-voltage pulse current passes through it, a spark discharge is generated, instantly producing high temperatures that melt or even vaporize the metal. Controlled by a CNC computer, the movement of the copper wire is like cutting complex shapes from polystyrene with a thin wire; it can also cut extremely precise contours into hard steel or tungsten carbide.
